Viet Hai Village

Viet Hai is a small village sheltered within the high jungle-clad mountain range of Cat Ba National Park. It belongs to the Cat Hai District of Hai Phong City. Vietnamese tourists seldom visit here, but it is becoming a popular attraction with the foreign tourists.

Until a few years ago, Viet Hai was totally shut off from the outside world. The local residents lived their self-reliant lives as they had done for thousands of years. It was the opportunity to observe such an isolated way of life which first attracted foreign visitors to this village. In recent years, together with the recognition of Cat Ba Archipelago as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, thousands of tourists have trekked through the mountains and jungles to visit this

unique attraction. Visitors are fascinated by the wild remote beauty to be found in the midst of the Biosphere Reserve within Cat Ba National Park.

Tourism infrastructure is being developed in order to allow more visitors to comfortably stay and enjoy the unique attractions of this ancient traditional village.

If you’d like to visit Viet Hai Village, you can hire a boat from Cat Ba to Viet Hai harbour. On the way you will have time to enjoy the beautiful waterway of Lan Ha Bay with its hundreds of small islands, rocky outcrops, white sandy beaches and floating houses.

From Viet Hai Harbour you have a choice of motorbike, bicycle, or trekking 6km to Viet Hai Village along a forest road. There is even a cave which you can pass through on your way, and plenty of photo opportunities of the green lake and majestic forest trees. In the village you can visit traditional houses and observe the buffalos working the fields, and the local people going about their lives.

One good option for seeing all this is to take a Lan Ha Bay 3-day cruise.
